Frequently Asked Questions About Groups

What is my Primary Group?
Each time you log in, you will be redirected to your Primary Group section. This section corresponds to the segment of the online community you may be most likely to interact with on a regular basis.

For Current Fellows, your Primary Group is your Site Group
In the case of current Fellows, your Primary Group is the Site Group for your state, (e.g. 2010-2011 NC Fellows will have "North Carolina Fellows” as their Primary Group). Site Groups are restricted to participants in each year’s cohort from each state and that site’s Coordinator(s); these pages are not visible to anyone else in the EPFP online community.

Current Fellows may be expected to interact on a consistent basis with their Fellows Group. Check with your site Coordinator(s) for specific instructions.

For Alumni, your Primary Group is your Alumni Group
Once you complete the Fellowship experience, your Primary Group becomes the Alumni Group for your state (e.g. all Fellows who complete the NC EPFP experience have "North Carolina Alumni” as their Primary Group), or the specific related program you participated in (e.g. Washington Internships in Education). Alumni Groups are visible to other members of the community but not the general public.

You may join multiple Alumni Groups. For example, if you participated in the MI EPFP program, but then move to North Carolina, you can join and participate in both the Michigan Alumni and North Carolina Alumni Groups. To join a group, simply find the group you want to join, navigate to that group's homepage, and then click the "Join Group" icon (under the group page heading).

What are Communities of Practice?
Communities of Practice are designated spaces in the EPFP online community for current Fellows and Alumni with a similar professional interest to gather, exchange ideas and resources, and share lessons from their professional experience. These groups are visible to other members of the community but not the general public.

You may join multiple Communities of Practice. To join a group, simply find the group you want to join, navigate to that group's homepage, and then click the "Join Group" icon (under the group page heading).

From time to time IEL will add additional Communities of Practice, so check back frequently to see if there's one that suits you. Or contact the EPFP national staff at epfp@iel.org, to request a new group.

How can I use my group(s) to interact with other members of the community?
As a group member, you can communicate with other members via discussion forums and blogs, share photos, and learn about alumni events or other events of interest. You can set the preferences in your profile to get automatic email updates when members join your group(s), when they update their profiles, when group photos are uploaded and/or when events are added to your group calendar.
