IEL Announces New Board of Directors Chairman

Board Member C. Kent McGuire Becomes the New IEL Board Chair

WASHINGTON—November 23, 2015—The Institute for Educational Leadership (IEL) has announced C. Kent McGuire, president of the Southern Education Foundation, as the ninth chair of the organization’s Board of Directors. Dr. McGuire succeeds current chair S. Decker Anstrom, who will remain a member of the Board.

Kent McGuire joined the IEL Board in October 2002 and is a 1981 alum of the organization’s Education Policy Fellowship Program (EPFP). As president of the Southern Education Foundation, he leads the Atlanta-based organization to advance equity and excellence in education in the American South.

“We are thrilled to have Kent McGuire lead our Board,” said Marty Blank, president of IEL. “He is a longtime friend of IEL. As the leader of an influential and respected organization that works to advance equity and education for all students in the South, Kent lives the cross-boundary leadership tenet that IEL so strongly believes in.”

Prior to his current role at the Southern Education Foundation, Dr. McGuire served as dean of the Temple University College of Education and was a professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies. He has also served as senior vice president at MDRC, Inc., and as Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education, and has previously worked in the education programs at the Pew Charitable Trust and the Lilly Endowment. McGuire has also written and co-authored various policy reports, book chapters, and papers in professional journals, and he currently serves on the boards of The New Teacher Project and the Alliance for Excellent Education.

“IEL has a really important history and is contributing a great deal to improving outcomes for children, youth, and their families. IEL’s work on creating pathways for youth people with disabilities, its work on family and community engagement, and its efforts to support a strong national coalition on community schools is both timely and impactful,” stated Kent McGuire. “I’m honored to serve the organization as its work makes these important contributions to the field.”

Dr. McGuire succeeds Decker Anstrom, retired president of Landmark Communications and Board of Directors of Discovery Communications. Anstrom served as Board chair for the past four years, and will continue to be a member of the IEL Board, which he joined in April 2010.

Kent is the perfect person to chair and lead IEL to the next level - working with our Board, Marty, and his team. His long experience with IEL, and his leadership, passion for educational opportunity and excellence, and deep personal relationships in the education community will be invaluable,” noted Decker Anstrom.

Decker Anstrom has had a long career in public service and the communications industry, serving as U.S. Ambassador and Head of the U.S. Delegation to the 2012 and 2015 World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-12), held under the auspices of the International Telecommunication Union. Prior to this role and leading Landmark Communications and The Weather Channel Companies, Anstrom served as president and CEO of The Weather Channel Companies, the National Cable Television Association, and Public Strategies, a Washington-based public policy consulting firm. During the Carter Administration, he was a senior staff member in the White House Office of Management and Budget, working on the creation of the U.S. Department of Education, and later served in the White House Office of Presidential Personnel.

“IEL is grateful for Decker’s years of leadership and guidance as Board chair,” said Marty Blank. “We are glad that he will continue to support IEL as a Board member dedicated to helping us continue to improve.”
