"I thoroughly enjoyed the Ohio EPFP trip to Appalachia!  The tour focused on many of the small coal towns in the area that have been adversely affected by declining population and a lack of jobs in the region. Throughout the tour, the guides highlighted historical facts such as the first negotiated labor agreement in the coal industry, influential African American leaders in the town of Rendville, and the Ohio Supreme Court DeRolf case that has influenced past and current struggles for an equitable educational system in the region and the state. My favorite moment of the trip was visiting Trimble Local Schools and seeing the connections the teachers and administrators make with their kids each day! The school systems in the area are faced with difficult challenges, but continue to innovate and find new ways to help school children be successful."
