School Turnarounds: What has Worked and What Has Failed

A recently published Mathematica study found that the $7 billion school “turn around” program initiated by the U.S. Department of Education under Secretary Arne Duncan had been unsuccessful in significantly upgrading student achievement. The Albert Shanker Institute offers a video panel of researchers and practitioners who examine the current state of research and on-the-ground efforts at school improvement that have worked in the past. The panel offers answers to the question “What should educators and policy makers conclude?” on school turnaround efforts.

Seven Questions Boards Should Ask About Their ESSA State Plans

In September the next round of states file comprehensive plans for how they will spend federal funding under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). In April, D.C. and 16 States turned in their plans. For those outstanding, Kristen Amundson the President/CEO of NASBE, provides a list of seven questions Boards should ask about their ESSA Plans. One of the important questions she lists is “Is stakeholder engagement embedded in the plan and seen as an ongoing activity”.

Major Savings and Reforms: Budget of the U.S. Government Fiscal Year 2018

Along with the release of the 2018 Budget, The New Foundation for American Greatness, the White House Office of Management and Budget also released this volume to describe the major savings and reform proposals included in the 2018 President’s Budget. It includes both discretionary and mandatory savings proposals that bring Federal spending under control and return the Federal budget to balance within 10 years. In total, this volume highlights 2018 savings of $57.3 billion in discretionary programs, including $26.7 billion in program eliminations and $30.6 billion in reductions.
